An Excerpt from My Book - It Had To Be Jay!

Josh McConnelly - The One Who Captures Katie's Heart

Oh, how I love that this rugged, scruffy ski bum! I love his realness, his strength of character, and his genuine love for life. I love that when Katie reflects upon her past she see's Josh's fingerprints all over each happy moment. And I love that through Katie's loneliness and heartache, Josh was a constant in her life and the reason her memories were sweet.

He was a good friend to Katie, and you know they say about that... Friends make the best lovers.
And nothing beats friendship as the foundation of forever love.

Enjoy!

===================================================================

Katie felt a rush of sadness as she watched Ms. Fitzhugh drive away. She fought back the tears and turned to head inside. Thankfully, and before she lost all composure, her cell phone began to ring. She smiled seeing that it was her work team leader and closest friend, Josh McConnelly, calling.

“Hey, Jay!”

“Hey! You doing OK? I still feel horrible that Greg and I just dropped you off this morning. I should’ve come back to help you.”

“It’s OK, I was fine. A little taken back by all of the packing stuff Marcus left me, but fine.”

“Did he really?”

“He did, and he even packed up some of my things. But hey, he got what he wanted. I’m out of his house and at the Hilton as we speak.”

“I’m so sorry, Kat. I’ve got nothing going on tonight if you want me to come hang out.”

“I’d love that. Have you had dinner?”

“Not yet.”

“Good! This will be the perfect way to spend my last night in Colorado.”

“Wait, last night? I thought you weren’t leaving until Monday?”

“I was, but there’s no reason for me to stay. Plus, I’m ready to get home.”

No response.

“Jay?”

“Yeah, I’m here. Just a bit shocked by that. OK, I’m walking out the door.”

#

Check-in was uneventful. Marcus had left his credit card information, so all the front desk needed was a copy of Katie’s driver’s license. Her room was ready so the clerk went to get her key.
With her room key in hand, Katie headed toward the lobby to wait for Josh. She didn’t see him as he came up behind her and covered her eyes. “Guess who?”

“Oh! You dork!” Katie giggled, reaching up for a hug. “I’m so happy you’re here.”

“You do almost look happy again.”

“Thanks a lot!” She playfully smacked his arm. “I didn’t know I was looking so miserable.”

“You weren’t looking miserable. Oh, you know what I mean. It’s just nice to see you smiling again.”

“Well, before you go make any other rude comments about my appearance, let’s head up to my room and order some dinner. I’m starving!”

#

Katie was pleasantly surprised to find that her room was actually a one-bedroom suite. As they walked inside, they entered a comfortable and modern living room. To the right of the living room was the dining area, and its table had been strategically placed in front of a wall of windows. On the adjacent wall was a wet bar, followed by a set of double doors leading into the bedroom.

“Man, Marcus did you good! Just look at the view.” Josh exclaimed from the dining area windows. Katie had to admit it was a pretty spectacular view, however she felt suspicious of Marcus’s motives. “I’m thinking Marcus wanted to keep me happy and my mouth shut.”

“Or maybe he feels bad and is just trying to be nice.”

“Who knows? Wait, whose side are you on anyway? You’d better not be defending him.”

“I am definitely not defending him, and you know I’ll forever be on your side.”

“Good answer,” Katie smiled, and went to grab the room service menu.

#

“I’m stuffed,” Josh complained, remnants of the meal still covering their plates.

“Yeah, I don’t think we’ll need to eat for days. So, what do you want to do?”

“I don’t care. We could watch a movie?” Josh suggested

“We could, or I have a deck of cards. We could play Gin Rummy?”

“Arrrrgh! Noooo!”

“Aww Jay, come on. I promise I’ll go easy on you.”

“Oh all right. But only because it’s your last night here.”

Katie dashed to get the cards and held them up with a devilish grin. She loved playing with Josh because she always beat him. Or was it that he never tried very hard? She didn’t know, but nevertheless it was always entertaining.

“Be nice,” Josh pleaded.

“Sure I will,” Katie replied with a smirk and shuffled the deck.

While they played they relived old memories from work. They laughed especially hard at Josh’s stories that included their boss, Bob. He could mimic Bob’s loud, boisterous voice to a tee.

“I’m really going to miss working with you and Greg. Can you believe we’ve been together for almost three years?”

“I know! I still remember the day you started.”

“You do? What do you remember?”

“Well, I was wearing a khaki shirt, Greg had on a light brown sweater, and then you walked in wearing a tan pant suit. Do you remember that?”

“Oh my gosh, yes! Bob kept calling us ‘brown town.’ That was so random,” Katie laughed. “Bob always did know how to lighten the mood in a room.”

“I remember Greg was so embarrassed that he took off his sweater and then whined about being cold.”

“Tough-guy, Greg. We should call and invite him to join us.”

“I called on my way over but he had a family thing. He said he’d phone us later.”

They went back to playing Gin, and Katie continued to dominate. “I give up!” Josh threw down his cards in a playful huff.

“Josh McConnelly! You are such a sore loser. If you only tried harder you might win some.”

“I know, I know. Hey, why don’t we sit by the windows and watch the sun set?”

“Great idea,” Katie nodded.

“So Kat, tell me honestly. How are you doing?”

Katie sighed and looked away. “Honestly, I still feel angry and confused, and maybe even a little scared. But you know something? It’s been nice to turn it all off for a while.” She smiled weakly at Josh. “Thank you.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Yes you did. You’ve been the perfect distraction. This has been a lot of fun.”

“Good, I’m glad I could help.”

“You always do.”

Katie looked down at her hands. Sadly Marcus had known how to provide her with the finer things, but he’d stopped giving her what mattered most—his time. Maybe that was why she always enjoyed Josh. Somehow he made her feel alive again.

She looked back up at his boyishly handsome face and smiled. Josh returned her smile, and Katie reached over to touch his dimple. “Did you know I consider you my closest friend?”

Josh shook his head.

“I do. Marcus should have been that for me, but he wasn’t. Not anymore at least. It’s like he completely forgot about me. But you … you’ve cared enough to get to know me, and you actually like being with me. I thank God for you, Jay. You’ve been a huge blessing to my life.”

Josh was taken aback by her words, and his heart swelled within his chest. “Kat, I …”

“Oh! The phone! That must be Greg calling.” Katie hopped out of her chair and dashed to the telephone.

“Hello?”

“Hey. It’s me.” Marcus’s emotionless voice felt like a stab to Katie’s heart. Her face immediately dropped.

“What do you want?”

“I just wanted to check on you. How’s the packing going?”

“It’s done.”

“You’re done?”

“I didn’t have that much to pack thanks to you.”

“I just thought you might be tired from your trip.”

“Nope,” she answered coolly.

“Well, I just wanted to make sure you’re OK.”

“I’m fine, and now I’d like to get back to what I was doing.”

“What are you doing?”

“That’s none of your business anymore.”

“Katie, don’t be like that. Is someone there with you?”

“Jay’s here.”

“I should’ve figured. That guy’s always around,” Marcus said with annoyance.

“I’m hanging up now.”

“Hey, wait. What about the movers? Where are you going?”

“I’m moving home. Where else would I go?” Katie fumed. “Ms. Fitzhugh has your house key and she’s going to let the movers in. Everything should be in perfect order when you and Amie get back from Vegas.”

“I didn’t mean it like that, and who told you Amie was with me?”

“No one had to tell me, Marcus! There’s no way you’re company would send you there. Come on!”

Marcus was stunned into silence.

“Goodbye, Marcus.”

“ … Bye.”

Katie could’ve sworn he sounded a bit sad. No, she quickly decided, just guilty.

She hung up the phone feeling completely deflated. All of the hurt she’d forgotten came crashing back down. Josh went to her and pulled her into his arms. “You OK?”

“Yes … No … Ugh, I don’t know.”

“It’s OK. You can cry.”

“No! I don’t want to cry anymore. I’m sick of crying!” She pounded her fist into his chest. “I want to hit him! I want to hurt him so bad.”

“I know you’re mad, and frankly I’m ticked at him too, but eventually you’re going to have to forgive the guy.”

“You sound just like Ms. Fitzhugh.”

“Well, she’s a wise woman. Here, come sit down.”

“Did you just say you’re mad at him too?”

“Are you kidding me? What he did to you yesterday was downright cold. As far as I’m concerned, Marcus is not only a jerk, he’s a total blockhead. He has no idea what he’s giving up.”

“That’s sweet. And I like the word you just used.”

“It’s better than the word he deserves. I’ve gotta say, Kat, I never did understand why you stayed with him. You two are so different.”

“You think?”

“Oh come on! I don’t mean to be rude, but he’s one of the most arrogant guys I know. I’ve never met anyone less friendly. You, on the other hand, are thoughtful and kind. You sincerely care about others and you’re beautiful from the inside out.”

“Wow, I never knew you felt this way.”

“Now you do.”

Katie looked away from his piercingly honest eyes and sighed. She hated to admit it, but Josh was right.

For quite some time they sat lost in their own thoughts. Katie continued to think of Marcus while Josh floundered in the love he so desperately wanted to declare.

“It’s late. I should probably head on.”

“Jay, please don’t go. I don’t want to be alone; I’ll just be miserable. Please stay.”

“OK, but I’m sleeping on the couch. I don’t want your snoring to keep me awake.”

“Me snore? Greg says you snore!”

“Then you’ll definitely want me out here.”

“I don’t care where you sleep as long as you stay.”

Katie got herself ready for bed, crawled under the covers, and called for Josh. When he entered the room, the sight of Katie in her pajamas took his breath away. It touched his heart to be so close to her in such an innocent, yet intimate and personal way. Suddenly he knew he would need the Lord’s supernatural strength to keep his thoughts pure. He was so attracted to Katie he could hardly stand it.

He walked to her bedside and reached for her hand. She willingly gave it to him. “Can I pray with you?” he asked and she nodded.

“Lord, please comfort Katie and heal her heart. Keep her safe as she travels back to Texas. Bring her new friends that will encourage her, and keep her in the palm of Your hand. Amen.”

Katie looked up into his tender eyes. “Would you stay here with me until I fall asleep?” Although he knew he probably shouldn’t, Josh nodded and lay down on top of the covers. Katie smiled and closed her eyes. Within minutes she was sound asleep.

Josh stared at Katie and pondered their relationship. He would miss seeing her every day, and he would especially miss hanging out with her outside of work. He had other friends he could fall back on, but he preferred Katie.

As he grappled with this fact, he silently pleaded with God. Help me to be strong tomorrow … and all the days after when she’s gone.

#

Early the next morning, Josh awoke to find himself next to Katie. She was still asleep and lightly snoring. He smiled to himself and peered at the clock. Quietly he moved to get up and crept out of the bedroom to order breakfast. After hanging up the phone, he walked to the windows to watch the city below come to life. Everyone seemed hurried to start their day but all he wanted was to make time stop.

He jumped when the room phone rang, and he was even more surprised to hear Katie quickly answer it. He could hear her thank the front desk for the wake-up call and hang up the phone.

“Jay?” Katie called out, and was clearly relieved when he entered the bedroom. “I was worried you’d left.”

“Nope, still here. I ordered us breakfast. It should be here any minute.”

“Thanks. How’d you sleep? Was the couch comfy?”

“Actually, I fell asleep next to you. And, by the way, you do snore.”

“You lie!”

“It’s true, but it’s a cute, girly snore.”

“A ‘cute, girly snore’? Well thanks, I guess!”

After breakfast, Katie hurried to get ready for her massage. When she came out she found Josh staring out the windows. He looked distant and pensive.

“It’s a beautiful city isn’t it?”

“It is. You ready for your spa thing?”

Katie nodded. “Will you walk me down?”

“Of course.”

They were silent the entire way to the lobby. When they entered the hallway leading to the spa, Katie suggested he stay and join her.

“No, I need to get home. I’ve got some work to finish up.”

Katie looked disappointed. “I really don’t want you to go. I hate goodbyes.”

“Me too.”

“So stay.”

“Aww Kat, I can’t.” He reached out and pulled her into his arms.

“I hate this, Jay. I feel like I’m losing everything.”

I know how you feel. Josh thought to himself.

“Will you call me later?” Katie asked, looking up into his hazel eyes.

“I promise.”

“I guess I’d better go. I don’t want to be late.”

Josh pulled open the door. “Have fun, Kat.”

She nodded. “Bye.”

Josh smiled and let the door slowly close. He turned to head back the way he came when he heard her voice calling from behind. “Jay! Wait!” Katie ran and threw herself up into his arms. “I’m going to miss you so much.”
“I’ll miss you too,” he replied, breathing in the smell of her hair once more. More than you even know

Josh - The One Who Almost Got Away

John Krasinski - The perfect Jay

Meet Josh, AKA "Jay." Josh is the charming, witty, kind and thoughtful final love interest in my novel, Finding Forever. I based his character on one of my favorite TV actors, John Krasinski. Being the huge "Office" fan that I am (I still love to binge watch the series!), I couldn't resist using John's character, Jim Halpert, as my muse when I wrote the various scenes with Josh. I wanted him to be the type of man who is not only fun and charismatic, but also capable, dependable, and steadfast.

What I loved about Josh's character was his authenticity. What you see is what you get with Josh. There's no pretense. However, he's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. He lets his own fear, if not the constant bad timing, keep him from being honest about his feelings for Katie, the heroine of my book. But in the end he becomes the right fit for Katie when she realizes that he's not only been her anchor through her past, but that he's the mainstay she wants for her future.

Stay tuned for a Finding Forever excerpt featuring my favorite good guy, Josh "Jay" McConnelly...

An Excerpt From My Book -- Doctor Charlie

Doctor Charlie Warren will forever remain one of my most cherished characters from Finding Forever. He couldn't help but capture a bit of my heart. Charlie isn't just handsome, he's charming, caring, and kind. When writing about Charlie, I wanted him to come off as likeable, but also slightly perfect. When Katie observed him, I wanted her to find him so flawless that he was intimidating. I remember picturing his hair perfectly coiffed - not a strand out of place.

I think this picture-perfect image came from my Highland Park upbringing. Although I have many wonderful memories from growing up in this dynamic community, there was definitely a sense, if not an unspoken expectation, that one must appear "put together" and "perfect." Oh, the pressure! Especially for this feisty, noncompliant red-head!

Although Katie liked what she saw and who Charlie was, these qualities didn't necessarily make him right for her. In the end, I respected Katie for not just choosing the hot, rich doctor, but the one who was rightly suited to her - both heart and soul.

Needless to say, Charlie was still a dreamboat, and I thoroughly enjoyed writing his story.

Enjoy an excerpt from my book. This was one of my very favorite scenes...

=================================================================

Katie pulled the truck out of the barn and drove onto the worn, graveled road. She drove Charlie past the farmhouse and over a narrow bridge leading to one of her favorite spots on the property. She parked the truck and shut off the engine.

Katie led Charlie along a well-worn path leading down to a heavily shaded creek. Several huge, flattened boulders rested above the moving water. Taking a seat on one of the large rocks, Katie patted the spot next to her for Charlie to sit.

“This is beautiful.”

“Yeah, Keith and I used to come here all the time to hunt for fossils. After my dad died I’d come out here to get away from everyone. People were constantly coming and going, and it just got to the point where I couldn’t fake a smile anymore. I’d come here to try to forget the pain.”

Both of them grew quiet. Katie sat remembering the early days after her dad passed while Charlie’s thoughts went to Lana. Charlie turned to face Katie. His look was intense, almost piercing. Katie wasn’t sure what to think, so she asked what was wrong.

“Nothing’s wrong…” Charlie paused, not sure how to put into words what he wanted to say. “I just think it’s time I told you something; something about my past.”

Katie turned her body to give him her full attention.

“I don’t know where this,” Charlie pointed from himself to Katie and back, “… where you and I are going, but even if we simply remain friends I think I would want you to know.”

“OK.”

“I had a very serious girlfriend in high school and on into college. Her name was Lana Taylor, as in Taylor Oil & Gas.” Katie shook her head not recognizing the name. “Anyway, Lana and I started dating in high school.” Charlie proceeded to tell Katie about their rocky history. Katie listened intently; her face a clear reflection of the up and down emotions Lana’s life and death produced.

“I’m so sorry, Charlie.” Katie said honestly. “I’ve often wondered what was behind the pain in your eyes. Somehow it’s stayed with you.” Immediately Katie regretted her words and looked down with embarrassment.

Charlie lifted her chin. “Look at me,” he gently commanded. “You’re right. The pain has stayed. But Katie, meeting you has been like a balm to my soul. No matter what happens between us I will always be indebted to you.”

Tears welled up in Katie’s eyes. In some ways Marcus had been a balm for her soul. After her dad died, he’d swooped in at just the right time. Her heart needed rescuing, and falling in love with Marcus had helped her move forward. She couldn’t help but wonder if Charlie would be the one to help her move past Marcus.

“Don’t cry, Katie.”

“Sorry.” she quickly wiped her eyes. “I just don’t get it. Why can’t life be easier? Why does it have to hold so much heartache?”

“Because God wants us to trust him in all circumstances. Plus, this isn’t really our home anyway.” Gently Charlie wiped Katie’s cheeks and pushed her hair behind her shoulders. He studied her face and suddenly his look began to change. Katie could tell he wanted to kiss her, and she was surprised to find herself ready to receive it.

Charlie, sensing her openness, leaned down and gently kissed her lips. He slowly pulled away to see her reaction, and was pleased to find Katie leaning in for more.

Thunder erupted in the distance, but neither of them noticed. Charlie moved to kiss Katie’s cheek and neck, and Katie closed her eyes, savoring the touch of his wandering lips. Charlie’s mouth moved back to Katie’s, and their kissing grew stronger and more passionate.

Mercifully, as if God knew a line was soon to be crossed, the rain began to pour down from above. Quickly, they pulled apart and burst into laughter. Charlie helped Katie up and they raced back to the truck.

“That was crazy!” Katie laughed.

“No kidding. When I went running this morning there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.”

“I’m sure my makeup is everywhere.” Katie leaned up to look in the rearview mirror.

“I think you look great,” Charlie said, pulling her to himself.

“Mmm, you feel warm.” Katie snuggled into this body, her teeth beginning to chatter.

“We should get out of these wet cloths,” Charlie said, his voice sounding unusually husky. Katie looked at him curiously. “And into dry clothes, that is.” Charlie added with a crooked smile.

Katie stared up into his eyes, her face looking pensive. Charlie stared back lovingly, waiting to hear what she had to say. Katie pressed her palm to his cheek and spoke quietly. “You really are a good man.”

Charlie squeezed her tight and thought to himself, Only with God’s strength.

The rain continued to pour as they drove the truck back to the barn. Once it was parked they ran as fast as they could to the back porch. Katie ripped open the screen door and they darted inside. The door slammed shut and they stood there laughing hysterically. Despite their speed, they were still drenched to the bone.

“Shhh! Your brother’s asleep,” Emily spoke from the back door. “My goodness, you’re soaked! Where were you anyway?”

“I took Charlie to the creek.”

Emily smiled. She was happy Katie felt comfortable to share her favorite spot with Charlie. “Darling, go get out of those wet clothes. Charlie, I’ll run up and see what I can borrow from Keith. You can get cleaned up in the guest apartment.” Emily pushed Katie toward the door. “Katie, go! Or you’ll catch a cold.”

“I’m going, I’m going.” Katie turned to Charlie, “Hey, just stay up there and I’ll come to you. We can play that game of pool after all.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ll look forward to seeing if you’re as good as you say you are.”

Katie darted up the stairs and Charlie waited until Emily returned with a bag of clothes. “Hopefully something in here will fit you. Oh, and here’s an umbrella.” Charlie thanked Emily and turned to head out the door.

“Oh Charlie, there’s a bunch of board games and old movies up in the closet. The TV should be working unless the weather’s knocked it out.”

Charlie nodded and ran as fast as he could to the barn apartment. He couldn’t wait to hop into the shower to warm up his body and cool down his hormones. Assuming Katie was doing the same, Charlie took his time in the soothing hot water. Ironically, a few minutes after he stepped out of the shower he heard a knock at the door. He threw on a pair of Keith’s boxers and jeans and hurried down the stairs.

As Katie took in his appearance her breath caught in her throat. Charlie was still towel-drying his hair. Shirtless. Katie couldn’t help but stare at his rippling muscles and exquisite body. Suddenly she felt a stab of self-consciousness. All she had done was change clothes, brush out her wet hair, and touch up her makeup. Charlie didn’t seem to mind, though, as he happily moved aside to let her in.

“That was fast. I wasn’t expecting you so soon.”

“I just threw on some dry clothes. I didn’t shower.”

“Well, I guess I’ll let you in anyway.”

“Aww, thanks.”

Charlie headed straight toward the pile of Keith’s clothes and chose a t-shirt. Katie couldn’t resist admiring his abs as they flexed and tightened while he pulled on his shirt.

Charlie caught Katie watching and smiled as she blushed. Quickly she looked toward the pool table. “So, you’re sure you want to try your luck against me? I’m seriously good.”

“We’ll just see about that.”

“If you rack ‘em you can break ‘em.”

“Deal.” Charlie nodded and grabbed the triangle. Once the balls were ready, he lined up his pool stick and struck the cue ball. The balls smashed apart and a striped ball fell into the corner pocket.

“Yes! Thank you, Charlie. I prefer solids,” Katie gloated. Twenty minutes later she was reveling in her victory.

“Listen here, you!” Charlie rustled her hair. “Who do you think you are, anyway?”

“The winner, that’s who!”

“Now you’ve done it!” Charlie pulled her into his arms and Katie playfully resisted and beat his chest. She smiled up into his eyes and her body relaxed into his taut arms. Instinct took over as he leaned down and planted a firm kiss upon her lips. Charlie was pleased to feel Katie wanting and reaching for more.

The same passion they’d felt by the creek began to take over, and neither of them wanted the feeling to stop. Again, as if the angels were working overtime, an unexpected interruption forced them apart.

“Yoo-hooo!”

With lightning fast speed, Katie and Charlie pushed apart. Emily entered the room to find Katie pulling out the balls from the corner pockets and Charlie racking them up.

“Oh good. I’m glad to see that table getting some use. Who won?”

“She killed me,” Charlie replied.

“I’m not surprised. She beats everyone. I brought you two some lunch and snacks. I thought you might be getting hungry. I’m off to see a movie and grab some dinner with Glenda and Mike.”

“OK. Thanks, Mom.”

“No problem, darling.” Emily gave her daughter a knowing smile and turned for the stairs. “Have fun and stay dry.”

“We will,” Katie replied, and shook her head in relief.

Charlie...The Doctor of Distraction

Mathew Fox - The face of Charlie

Meet Charlie...a handsome and charming sports doctor, and all around good guy. Charlie becomes the perfect distraction for Finding Forever's heroine, Katie Kaufmann, as she recovers from her recent break-up and the adjustments to life back in Texas.

When I wrote the scenes with Charlie, Matthew Fox was the man who came to mind. Maybe it was his role as a doctor on one of my favorite all-time TV shows, "LOST," or maybe it was his brotherly vibe on "Party of Five?" Whatever the case, there was no one else I could picture in the role of Charlie. Matthew was my man.

As for the character of Charlie, I wanted him to be likable - extremely likeable. I guess you could say that I succeeded since several of my readers have complained that he wasn't Katie's final choice in the end! However, it was never my intention for Charlie to be "the one." Rather, my purpose was for him to be the catalyst to rebuild Katie's confidence and help heal her bruised heart. Ultimately, I wanted Charlie to be a distraction...a rebound, so to speak, but nevertheless a good and decent man.

Stay tuned for a Finding Forever excerpt featuring my favorite distraction... Dr. Charlie Warren.

An Excerpt from My Book -- From Marcus, With Love???

Marcus may be sexy, but he can also be heartless...

Below you'll find my two favorite segments with Marcus. The first one takes places over the phone and the second over the computer. I chose these two scenes because the first shows Marcus's motive (get Katie out) and the second his manipulation (keep Katie dangling).

I don't know about you, but the bad boys I came across in my past certainly knew how to string a girl along. One smile, one touch and our hearts were right back where they wanted them.

Enjoy...

SCENE ONE

==================================================================

“Hello?”

SCENE TWO

Katie was beginning to savor her alone time in the morning. She loved the simple things like heading downstairs in her pajamas and drinking coffee on the back porch. This morning was no different from the others until she decided to check her email.
Katie firmly set her mind to not get upset if Marcus hadn’t written. Humorously, his was the first email she spotted. She shook her head in amazement. “Just when I decide to not care, he writes.” Despite the shock, she still couldn’t resist opening his message.
                 Hey Katie,
I wanted to make sure you made it back in one
piece. I checked with the movers and they said
they’d completed the job. I guess everything went
OK. I found some of your clothes in the dryer so
I’ll mail them to your mom’s. I’ve been thinking
about you and I hope you’re doing well. Everyone
here says to tell you hi. Stay in touch.
                Marcus
Immediately Katie felt flustered. Marcus had been so heartless when he wanted her out of his life. Now he wants her to stay in touch? “What is he thinking?” She fumed. “If he thinks I’m going to crawl right back to him he’s crazy.”
Katie got up from the porch rocker and stormed into the kitchen. She slammed down her mug in the sink as the hot tears welled up in her eyes. Furiously she wiped them away and stared out the window towards the hills in the distance.
I lift my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth...  Katie couldn’t remember where she’d heard this, but the memory of the verse sent her thoughts heavenward.
“Jesus, what do I do? Marcus makes me so mad. I’m sick of feeling manipulated by him. I’m starting to see things differently and I can honestly say I don’t want him back in my life. But Lord, how do I repay him good when I can’t even trust him?”
The tears rolled over onto her cheeks. “Ugh! And I’m so sick of crying about this. God, please help me.”
Quietly, as if a voice were speaking from behind, Katie heard the word, “Love.”
“But I don’t want to love him anymore! I want to forgive him, but I don’t want to waste any more love on him.”
“Love.”
“OK, Lord. Have it Your way. But You’re going to have to show me what You want me to do.”
Katie headed out to the back porch to grab her Bible. She flipped to the concordance at the back and scanned through the “L” words until she found the word, “Love.” She looked through the list of shortened verses for something to jump out at her. Nothing grabbed Katie’s attention until her eyes hit one particular line: “L your neighbor and hate your enemies … Mt 5:43.”
Katie knew the ‘L’ signified love, but what intrigued her was the part about hating one’s enemies. She figured it wasn’t what the passage would say, but she wanted to read it anyway. Katie turned to the book of Matthew and read the reddened words of Jesus, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemies,’ but I tell you: Love your enemies and pray …” Katie stopped reading as the word pray practically jumped off the page.
“You want me to pray! Praying is how I can love Marcus. OK Lord, if that’s what You want I’ll give it my best.”
Katie closed her eyes, took and deep breath, and quieted her heart. “Lord, please be with Marcus. Help him see his need for You. Help him see that he needs a Savior. I pray You’ll also be with Amie. I pray You will … uh … I pray for Your love to rest on them both. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Katie began to laugh. She knew her prayer was pretty basic, but she didn’t care. She did it, and that was all that mattered.
“Lord, what should I do about his email? Ignore it?” Something within her said no. “Then I’ll write him back, but Lord please protect me from his games.”
Several minutes later her response was complete.
                Marcus,
The move went fine. It’s been great to be home.
My brother is the reigning football star of
last week’s game, and my mom’s business is
booming. They seem happier than ever and it’s
good to be back in their lives. Thanks for mailing
back my clothes. I should’ve checked there, so
sorry about that.  I wish you the absolute best in your life.
                God bless you,
                Katie

Katie felt good about her email. Weird, but good.

Marcus...Tall, Dark & Dangerous

Marcus Spencer - a man who exists to please himself.

Meet Marcus Spencer. He's the cliché bad boy who leaves a horde of broken hearts in his wake - including my Finding Forever's heroine, Katie Kaufmann.

When writing about Marcus, I wanted him to encompass everything enticing that women can't resist. I wanted him to be overly confident yet charming, self-centered yet sexy. He's the type of man who, when he enters a room, the ladies notice and the guys grimace.

I imagine Marcus as a man who rarely considers other's feelings. Readers certainly won't find him asking for permission or seeking anyone's approval. He's a man who knows what he wants, and when he sees something he likes he goes after it...hard.

So when Marcus decides he prefers the bubbly, redheaded barmaid to his current, live-in girlfriend, Katie, he doesn't look back. He callously kicks Katie to the curb, and his new love interest quickly fills her place. He only begins to regret his decision when his new partner becomes inconveniently pregnant.

Stay tuned for a Finding Forever excerpt featuring my favorite bad boy, Marcus Spencer...

An Excerpt From My Book - My Favorite Time with Katie

This is how I picture Katie Kaufmann (Carrie Underwood-esque)

My favorite scene with Katie (the heroin of  my novel, Finding Forever) takes place in a barn. The section itself was quite moving for me to write. To give you some background... For the past year Katie has been sharing a house with her college boyfriend in Colorado. When his wandering eye lands and stays on a pretty redhead, she's quickly kicked out and forced to move home to small-town Texas. Now she finds herself living back at home with her mom and brother, and without a very missed, recently deceased father.

I loved writing this scene because of the fact that it takes place in a barn. Some of my fondest childhood  memories were from my time goofing around on my grandparent's farm in Corsicana, TX. From walking the pastures, throwing rocks in the stocked pond, or looking for treasures in the dilapidated barn, I filled many an hour or two on various adventures.

This chapter tells of Katie embracing her memories, and her feeling welcomed home by her father despite his passing. Personally, I like to think that our loved ones send whispers of their love from the other side. My hope was for this scene to do just that.

I hope you enjoy a wee piece of Katie's story...

Dad’s Old Truck
Katie awoke to the pit pattering of rain on the house’s metal rooftop. The gentle, calming sound brought a smile to her face. She stretched and inhaled a deep breath of air. It felt good to be home. Turning over, she looked at her clock and was surprised to see it was almost noon.
She got up and entered her bathroom. As she studied her bedraggled reflection, something occurred to her. She was twenty-four, single, and alone. At first she felt the familiar insecurity wanting to press in, but today she decided to resist its pull.

She looked into the mirror resolutely. “You know what? Maybe this is exactly what you need. Is it really that hard to live without Marcus? Mom lives without Dad, and she does it like a champ. You don’t need him to feel secure. And besides, look what he did to you. Look how he’s still controlling you. Stop it! Stop letting him win.” A funny smile crept across her face. “And stop talking to yourself. You’re not eighty!”

After a long, hot shower, Katie emerged refreshed and revived. She put on a clean pair of shorts and a t-shirt and headed downstairs. The house was peaceful and quiet. She made herself some lunch and went to sit out on the enclosed back porch. The rain had stopped and every tree and blade of grass looked green with health and replenishment.

Katie studied the craggy hills in the distance and quickly decided that although this countryside couldn’t compare to the mountains of Colorado, the mystique of the rugged and hardy terrain would forever hold a special place in her heart.

Sitting back in the rocking chair, Katie watched as a lone hawk flew overhead in the distance. She pondered what to do with her day. She knew she didn’t want to sit at home, but she didn’t have a car. Suddenly, another option popped into her mind. “Hmmm, I wonder.”

Katie got up and headed inside to the key rack. Happily she found what she was looking for. The keys to her father’s truck were still dangling from the ugly, leather key chain she’d made years ago at summer camp. “Nothing ever changes around here.” Katie shook her head and found she was glad for the fact.

She grabbed her purse and headed out to the barn to find her dad’s truck sitting in its same old spot. Katie figured her mother wouldn’t mind if she took it out for a spin.

“Please let this hunk of junk work.” Katie crossed her fingers and put the key into the ignition. All of a sudden, a rush of memories gave her pause. She pulled her hand away as images of her father filled her mind. Just the smell of the old, long leather seat and the feel of the ancient steering wheel reminded her of him. She remembered sitting on his lap and steering this truck around the property. She giggled as she recalled herself believing she was actually driving.

Her father was a huge Willie Nelson fan and his music was constantly playing. Katie wondered if one of Willie’s old cassette tapes would still be in the tape player. She looked down at the stereo and pressed the eject button. Sure enough, his favorite tape popped out.

Katie turned to look back toward the truck’s bed and remembered riding back there with Keith. We used to love getting bounced around, Katie thought with a smile. I loved lying back there and watching the stars glisten in the night sky.

Like a dam being released, hot tears spilled down her cheeks. Katie missed her father terribly, but what she was feeling wasn’t grief. Rather, it was like a reunion of sorts. Strangely she could sense her father was pleased she was home. It was like he was smiling down from above. Katie closed her eyes and welcomed the feelings. Somehow this truck was awakening a joy she hadn’t felt in a long, long time.

“Dad, I miss you so much,” Katie said through her tears. “Now that I’m home it’s like everything’s new. Even this truck feels different.” Katie sat back smiling from ear to ear. “Dad, will you do me a favor?” She looked up at the shadowy lights dancing in the barn’s loft. “Please help this old truck work. You always did have complete faith in it, and I’d really love to get out of here for a while.”

Katie reached for the key. “Here goes nothing.” She turned the ignition, and instantly the truck roared to life. “Woohoo! Thank you, Daddy!” she cheered and steered the truck out of the barn.

She stopped and looked up at the sky. “I know you’re in heaven, but right now, Dad, it feels like you’re with me. I was just going to drive around today, but maybe you could...I don’t know...show me something new. Lead me to something you’d like me to see.” Katie felt foolish talking to the air but she didn’t care. Today she felt something different, something extraordinary.
At this very moment she knew her father was near.
